Oral Histories of 96th Division Deadeyes

Research Help

Our Project

We are working to find all of the known Deadeye Oral Histories, their stories, to be listed in just one place.

These will have a special place on the Remember the Deadeyes website, labeled "Oral Histories." Each Deadeye's information will be easy to find from there.

These audio and video files can be found in many places around the internet. There is not a single place, a location, to find them.

Finding the Oral Histories

Many Museums and History organizations around the country are participating with the Library of Congress (LOC).  However, they are looking for any WWII story, not just the 96th Infantry.

We need to find those that are not directly linked from the LOC. We have to research to find them.

This may take time, following a trail of sites to find the actual files. Be sure to send me the final location. If you cannot find it, please tell me. There will be many which cannot be found.

Where we are Now

So far we have stories from each of 100 Deadeyes. Most of these links have come directly from the Library of Congress(LOC). The LOC has already found these and listed them. Each of their files, have a direct link to the stories. Those are the easy ones.

We have already listed all that are directly linked.

A step by step example below the Sign Up section.

The Research Needed

  1. You will need to get the Deadeye's name from the page. They are listed alphabetically.
  2. https://www.loc.gov/vets/   Search at Library of Congress
  3. Many of the links lead to a dead end. We can then follow the information that is given. They do list where the file may be found. But for that there is no link.
  4. We are asking members and friends of the 96th Infantry Division - the Deadeyes, to help us do this research. You will need to use the information given at each of these to find the actual file. I need the URL which is the actual address.
  5. Some of these will have a link to another website. Usually another website is referenced where there is a direct link to that story, maybe. It may lead you to another place.
  6. Most will list a museum, or another history project right there, but no link is given. For those we need to use Google or another search engine to find that organization on the web. From there we ask to find the audio or video's file and location. We will use this to add to each Deadeye's individual place on our Oral History Project.
  7. Some will only have a physical address where the person who is looking for a story, may write to find the information. We would still like this information also to put with the Deadeye's place.

Thank You!

Examples of what you do to get started

This is where you will start.

1. Go to your webpage- the one you have signed up to research. Find any file that says "Research Needed." click that and you will go to the LOC search page. https://www.loc.gov/vets/

2. Click on the words that say Search the Veteran's Collections and you wil be at the Veterans History Project.

3. Click that link and you will be at the LOC search page....

This is where your research will actually begin - at the Library of Congress search

4. Type the name of the Deadeye in the search space. This example is for William J Olcheski.

5. Press GO

This is the next page you will see.

This takes you to the file with the Deadeye name on it. This is for the Deadeyenamed William J Olcheski.

6. Click on the name in the lower left. It is underlined

7. This is where you will go. This is an example of a page that DOES NOT have link to the Video or Audio.

The information in the right column will give you information you will need. This is where we need for you to research. Look at the right column. A good place to go is the Contributer Affiliation/Organization. In this case you might start at University of Mary Washington, Department of Historic Prevervation. it is underlined. You can email, call, or any other technique that will find the actual file. Copy the URL address so you can tell me in an email.

After you do one or two this will all make sense. GOOD LUCK!

Please send an email telling the Deadeye Name, The exact location, the URL you found that has the video or audio. I will then be able to include that with each oral history.  Any contact information you found.

ALSO Look at this image.

This is an example that DOES have a digitized link and there will be the box that says "View Digitized Collection."   If you find this go to Oral Histories to the video or audio file is already on the page. Please let me know if it isn't listed, so I can get it there.

When you are as far as you can go

Please email me the

Deadeye's Name,

Place you found it,

URL to the exact place to Link.

Or tell me it is a dead link - It can't be found.

You can email me at anytime, with any question, clarification.

janwharton@me.com   or   Leave your phone number if you'd like for me to call you.

Thank You!
